Songs & Updates for Saturday, October 25, 2014

This Saturday is the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Last Saturday, Jonathan and I met from 3-4 PM to plan mass/rehearsal and discuss Music Ministry affairs. Most notably, we discussed ways to keep us moving forward as an ensemble now that things have more-or-less normalized again.

Our new project for the coming months will be to resurrect a number of prelude pieces that we've started but not finished. These include (in no particular order):

We'll start with 'Increase Our Faith', as Ginny purchased sheet music for this song online a month or so ago.

We don't yet have a set date for doing this piece or a plan for programming the others, but may start dedicating rehearsal time to working on these pieces. In the interim, we may end up doing more unplanned preludes in the weeks to come, like we did this week with Jim's version of 'Go Tell in On the Mountain' and last with 'Grace Revealed'.

This will also give me a chance to practice more 'advanced' conducting techniques that can later be applied to the songs we do during mass.

Even though we were short two instrumentalists last week, mass went fairly well. Nice work, all! There were a few communication issues that caused confusion for the singers, though. Please be sure to watch me for entrances and cues so we're all on the same page -- this especially goes for pieces were we're not doing all the verses or have a different arrangement than written.

After mass, Jonathan, Jim, Lisa K., Ginny and I briefly reviewed the music for this week. Of note, Lisa K. will spearhead 'The Lord is Kind and Merciful' due to the entire piece not being in a good range for Jonathan to sing. We'll also be doing 'Pan de Vida' one last time before switching to a new common Communion song next week (TBD).

For 'Where Charity and Love Prevail', we have two potential arrangements depending on which one Father prefers. We continued working on the call and response version we played with the week before last, which involves men and women alternating on each phrase of the song while maintaining the slower tempo (the congregation could also potentially be in on this).

Our second option is to do the piece largely as written, but with breaks between each phrase. Jim will speak to Father about this.

We also discussed how we'll be arranging 'Increase Our Faith' and crashed through the piece. What Jonathan and I came up with so far is as follows:

  • Cycle 1 - piano intro (eight bars)
  • Cycle 2 - soloist on Ostinato Refrain
  • Cycle 3 - soloist on verses one and two w/ background aahs
  • Cycle 4 -  all on Ostinato Refrain
  • Cycle 4 - soloist on verses three & four w/ all others on Refrain
  • Cycle 5 - all on Ostinato Refrain w/ harmony
  • Cycle 6 - repeat Ostinato Refrain a capella

I'm hoping to get music for November selected and sent off to the Office for approval in the next few days.

Also, for those unaware, per the note in the Bulletin, Barb H. is taking over for Christina in the Church Office as secretary/receptionist.

Barry & Joe are out this week.

(Also, just a quick heads up that Karina and I will be out on 11/8 for a play at Bald Eagle and 11/15 for a Faith Formation retreat.)

There will be practice after mass from 6:30-8:00 PM.

Here are the songs for this week:
