Nice job last week! We mostly had a program of fun, familiar tunes, and despite being light on singers, everything went pretty smoothly. Thanks to Jonathan for joining us on bass!
I apologize in advance for the longer-than-usual post -- the last week as been a bit eventful.
After five weeks of celebrating the Liturgy in the Hall, we were back in the Worship Space last Saturday. The Parish staff took the opportunity to tweak the setup a bit -- the hope is to bring the more intimate and less-formal atmosphere of the Hall into the Worship Space.
A few notable changes: the congregation seating has been staggered theatre-style, and the two center sections have been expanded. The choir seating hasn't changed too much, but a few chairs were moved against the wall for instrumentalists.
The front row of choir boom mics was also adjusted so they're no longer 'looking down' on us, which should (hopefully) make them better at picking up voices. The gain on the guitar mics has been adjusted so both are about the same (before, the mic on the right was turned way down). Barry did some work on the sound system last Friday, and I also neatened up some of the wiring running across the floor.
I had the opportunity to look through the congregation edition of the proposed new songbook. There's a fair amount of crossover with our current books, but at the same time, a number of our common songs are not included. Nothing has been decided yet, but Father Charlie would like to hold a meeting in the near future to discuss. Will keep you appraised.
I'm sorry to be the bearer of sad news, but for those who didn't hear, Joe Perez passed away last week. As some of you may recall, Joe was a long-time parishioner, Eucharistic Minister and Music Minister at Good Shepherd. Joe played saxophone with our group on a number of occasions, and was also a member of several local bands. Please keep Joe's family in your prayers this week.
As previously announced, Joe's funeral Mass will be tomorrow evening, 10/19, at 6:30 PM. From what I understand, Joe's band is leading some of the music, but Parish musicians are needed for the Communion song, Mass Parts, etc.. Denise (from the 11 AM Mass) will be playing piano; Lisa will be cantoring. Ginny and I are also planning to be there. If you're available to come sing and/or play, I'd suggest arriving no later than 6 PM. Will pass along further info as it becomes available.
We don't have any new songs this week, but will be blowing the dust off of several tunes we haven't done in a while, such as 'The Cry of the Poor' and 'Revive Us, O God'. Also, I know we did 'We Are Called' recently, but Father requested that all the Masses use it this weekend. I previously had 'Standin' in the Need of Prayer' listed for Closing.
I'm hoping to select Psalms and regular Mass music for November in the next few days. Stay tuned for an email, and as always, song suggestions are welcome and appreciated :-)
Eva and Frances are out this week.
Finally, just a heads up that I might be out the first Saturday in November, 11/6. Karina's USMC Basic Training graduation is (tentatively) scheduled for that week in Parris Island, SC, and I may not be back in time. I'll definitely be out on the second Saturday, 11/13, for the BEA Fall Play.
UPDATE: 10/22: Maggie is out sick today.
