Songs & Updates for Saturday, September 10, 2016

This Saturday is the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Nice job last week, folks, and I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the holiday weekend!

Jim and Maggie were out, but Eva, Joe and Jonathan were available to round out our instrument section. All the songs went pretty smoothly, and I was especially pleased with how well the Communion song turned out (check it out below!).

While we get the cantor situation sorted out, if anyone would like to take the Psalm for this week, let me know. One thing to keep in mind: the third verse has some pretty high notes, and would probably work best with a female voice. We could also drop this verse if it proves to be problematic.

For 'Remember Your Love', let's be careful not to start it off too fast. Last time, due to our starting tempo, the song had no room to grow. I know we won't have much time during Offertory to build this up, but even if we start the song off at a lesser tempo on the first verse and pick it up in the second, that should help to fix this.

For 'We Come Today', starting it at the beginning of Communion was a good call. It ended up not being quite long enough, but I'd much rather fill time at the end than have silence at the beginning. Another element that I liked was the staggered entrances of the singers and (to a lesser degree) instruments after returning from Communion. I know this wasn't planned, but it really helped to build the song up from a small group to a large group piece.

In case anyone was wondering what happened at the end of 'We Come Today', my intent had been to loop back to the first verse since we needed a little more time. My cue wasn't clear, though, and the instrumentalists ended up doodling for a minute or two instead. I think I might have let this run a bit too long, but otherwise, it was a nice change in pace that may be worth doing again as needed.

As a general reminder, Father Charlie raised the point that we need to make sure our entrances are strong so the congregation knows when to come in, etc.. I know this has been brought up before, but just something to keep in mind.

Per the Bulletin, Father Charlie is out this week; Father Baker will once again be covering.

I originally indicated that I'd be out this week, but we've had a change in plans and this is no longer the case. See you Saturday!
