Songs & Updates for Saturday, August 26, 2017

This Saturday is the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Thanks to everyone who was able to help with the Baptism last week! With everything that was going on, there were a few issues, but overall, the program went well. Having a thunderstorm in the middle of Mass definitely kept things interesting, and it was nice to have the Fricke clan back with us as well :-)

I'm hoping to pick the music for September this week (where did the Summer go?), and will have a new cantor schedule out in the next few days. As always, if you could give me an idea of your availability, that'll help with planning.

It sounds like there's interest in a monthly choir dinners. I'll see about getting one on the board for September. Stay tuned for details.

The Psalm is one I don't believe we've done before. If you're not familiar with it, please take a look before Saturday. The refrain is short and simple, but the even-numbered verses are a little tricky. The refrain is supposed to be sung as an ostinato -- if we're comfortable with the tune, we could give this a shot; otherwise, I'm not too worried about it. If anyone's up for it, this song also has plenty of opportunities for harmony.

I'm assuming most of you are familiar with our Offertory song Jesus in the Morning. The original intent was to do this as an a capella piece, but after experimenting with this last week, it seemed to work well with guitar and a bit of percussion thrown in. We'll probably start it slow and bring the tempo up as we go. This is a fairly short song, so we may need to get a bit creative to fill the time.

As far as accompaniment, Tom will be playing guitar, and Frances flute. Special thanks to both of them for agreeing to cover! If anyone would like to announce and/or sing from the guitar mics, that would free me up to focus on other things.

Finally, if you're interested in checking out the show, Group Therapy will be performing at 7 PM on Saturday. Details are up on their Facebook page.

UPDATE: 08/25: For the Parish's 'Season of Creation' next month, Father has requested that the choirs use two common songs for Gathering/Closing and Offertory. The first is Canticle of the Sun (which we know); the second is Touch the Earth Lightly (GC3 #805).

That second song is new, so please take some time to learn it before 09/02. We may also want to meet a bit early that Saturday (around 4 PM) to give us more prep time. Thanks!
